Community Art Shed

In 1991, the idea for a purpose built Arts facility located in the Whangarei Heads School grounds began out of a need for a specific space for the local community to develop their art/craft interests and express their creative talents.

Today The Artshed exists as a result of the enthusiasm and dedication of our community.  It is unique to this area; very few communities have a facility like this. The efforts put into organizing, fundraising, building and maintaining the Arts Centre indicates the value the community places on Art Education.

The prime motivation for this Centre continues to be to further the exposure and development of the Arts for the community by providing a space to hold exhibitions and educational workshops. Over the years the Artshed has offered programmes for both adults and children (day & evening). Classes in wearable art, stained glass, paper making, painting, drawing,  plein air sketching, pottery, printmaking, weaving, felting, silk dyeing, and children’s crafts, and a space for local artisans to meet.

The building itself was designed as an exclusive workshop space, with facilities such as expansive drawing tables, printing press, paper bath sinks, kiln, storage, kitchenette and an adjoining library resource.

If you have an interest in using any of our facilities, or providing any skills or workshops, please register with us. If you would like to participate in a workshop, or just get together with other artists, please let us know also.
